No. 17 USC Baseball Picks Up Dramatic 2-1 Win at No. 16 Oregon
May 14, 2026 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – Isaac Cadena hit the go-ahead homer in the 11th inning and made a sliding catch on the final out with the bases loaded as the No. 17 USC baseball team beat No. 16 Oregon 2-1 in 11 innings on Thursday night in Eugene.
Cadena's late heroics backed up another gem of a performance on the mound by Mason Edwards as he tossed six scoreless innings in the series opener. USC moves to 42-12 overall with the win and 20-8 in Big Ten play. Oregon falls to 36-15, 18-10 with the loss. The victory also secures a top four seed in the Big Ten Tournament for the Trojans.
After scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Dean Carpentier in the top of the second inning, USC took a 1-0 advantage all the way into the bottom of the ninth before Oregon tied the game with a solo-homer. Andrew Johnson got out of the ninth and then tossed a scoreless 10th before Cadena led the top of the 11th off with a solo-shot to right field.
The Ducks loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 11th, but Adam Troy got a strikeout for the second out and Cadena made a sliding catch on a flare to left that ended the game.
Edwards struck out 12 batters in his 14th start of the year, allowing just four hits and no runs as he held a potent Oregon offense in check all night. The junior lefty had to work out of one spot of trouble in the third as the Ducks put runners on second and third with no outs, but Edwards responded with three straight strikeouts to strand them both. He allowed just one runner after that and no one past first base, striking out five of the last seven batters he faced.
Sax Matson and Johnson combined to work a scoreless seventh and then Johnson set the side down in order in the eight. Oregon led the ninth off with the game-tying homer and then a single, but Johnson got a double play and Richard Tejeda threw a runner out at second to end the inning and send it to extras.
Johnson would set the side down in order on 12 pitches in the 10th. Johnson picked up the win and Troy notched his 12th save of the season in the game.
