USC SEASON RESUME: The Trojans yet again saw marked improvement under Head Coach Andy Stankiewicz this season, posting the program's first 40-win season since 2005. USC finished the regular season 43-15 (the most wins by a USC team since 2001) and made its second straight NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001-02. The Trojans had a strong case for a host bid this year, entering the postseason with the No. 9 RPI in the country, the most shutouts in the nation (10) and the second most series sweeps (9) in the NCAA. USC won 11-of-14 series on the year, with the only three series losses coming on the road to Top 15 RPI squads. USC set a program record this season, starting the year 19-0 and holding the distinction of being the last undefeated team in the country on March 14. The Trojans also set a program record with a 32-1 home record, losing their only game at the brand new Dedeaux Field on March 24 against then No. 16 Oregon State.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. TXST: Friday will be the first ever meeting between USC and Texas State.
Â
B1G TOURNAMENT: The Trojans advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament with a 7-0 win over 12th-seeded Michigan State on Friday. Mason Edwards led the way with 4.0 scoreless innings, only leaving the game early after a 90-minute rain delay after the top of the fourth. USC scored all seven of its runs with two outs. USC went toe-to-toe with No. 1 UCLA in the semifinal matchup on Saturday, rallying to take the lead in the top of the ninth with two runs before falling 7-5 in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off home run.
Â
B1G AWARDS: Mason Edwards highlighted the Big Ten Postseason awards for USC, earning B1G Pitcher of the Year with the release early last week. Edwards was joined by Govel on the first team, Jack Basseer and Adam Troy were on the second team, Diego Velazquez on the All-Freshman Team and Andrew Lamb earned the B1G Sportsman Award. Govel was also named to the All-Defensive Team.
Â
HOME DOMINANCE: The Trojans finished their regular-season with the best home record in program history at 32-1. The previous record was 30-3 set back in 1978. This year's record-setting mark comes in the first season at the new Dedeaux Field. USC's only loss at home this year was on March 24 against then-No. 16 Oregon State.
Â
NINE SWEEPS: USC's nine sweeps on the year marks a program record, surpassing the previous mark of six sweeps, accomplished in both 1991 and 1996. The Trojans have swept nine of the 14 series the team has played this season, including all eight at home. USC's nine sweeps were the second most in the NCAA this year.
Â
HOT START: The Trojans' 19-0 start to the season marked the best in program history and tied the USC record for the longest winning streak in program history, set in 1955. The Trojans were the final unbeaten team in the country before suffering their first loss of the season in the second game of a doubleheader at Northwestern. USC was also the first team to 20 wins in the country and was one of just four teams to hit 30 wins at the time. The Trojans' 30-7 record marked the fastest a USC team has gotten to 30 wins in a season since 1978 and this year's squad is one of just three Trojan teams to ever start a season 30-7, joining the 1978 and 1961 teams.
Â
PITCHING DOMINANCE: The Trojan pitching staff has been dominant throughout the season, posting the No. 1 Hits/9 (6.98), No. 1 shutouts (10), No. 4 WHIP (1.20), and No. 6 ERA (3.48) in the country.
