USC Baseball Advances to Super Regionals With 7-1 Win Over Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The USC baseball team advanced to the NCAA Super Regional round for the first time since 2005 on Monday, beating Texas A&M 7-1 in a decisive game seven at the College Station Regional.
The Trojans will head to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina next weekend, with a trip to the College World Series on the line.
A two-run rally in the fifth inning put the Trojans in front, with Abbrie Covarrubias driving in the tying run and then Augie Lopez bringing home Covarrubias with a two-out single to make it a 2-1 game.
Lopez would be the one to later bust the game open, hitting a three-run shot in the top of the seventh. Two insurance runs in the top of the eighth sealed it, with Lopez providing the second on a sacrifice fly.
Pitching on two days rest, Grant Govel gave USC a gutsy performance on the mound, giving up just one run in 4.0 innings. Govel allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out four as he threw 64 pitches on the heels of an 89-pitch outing on Friday.
After the USC rally in the fifth, Chase Herrell entered and shut the Aggies down from there. Herrell earned the win with 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out two. Sax Matson would get the final out of the eighth before Adam Troy closed things out in the ninth.
USC had to play its way out of the losers bracket in the regional after dropping its opener, winning four straight games to advance for the first time in 21 years. The Trojans beat Lamar in an elimination game on Saturday and then swept a doubleheader against Texas State and Texas A&M on Sunday to force a decisive game seven on Monday.
