HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a match that totaled 46 service errors, USC won the service line with six aces to the Aggies' three. The Trojans also had the edge in digs, 68-66, but UC Davis had more kills (50-48), assists (46-42), and blocks (11-9.5). USC managed to outhit the Aggies, .179 to .125.
- The Trojans hit .323 (13k, 3e) on 31 attacks to rack a 25-16 win in the opening frame. Faumuina, Ford, and Tvrdy each put up three kills in the effort. Both teams had two blocks apiece, but USC forced the Aggies into enough errors to log a .000 attack rate (7k, 7e) on 32 attempts. Etter led the floor defense with five digs while Faumuina and Wijay had two apiece.
- USC pulled out a 26-24 slugfest to go up 2-0. In a set that was tied 20 times, neither team led by anything more than a two-piece before the Women of Troy closed it out on an ace from Wijay. Faumuina and Wijay each had two kills to lead the Trojans who hit .036 over the Aggies' negative .030 hitting.
- It took 18 ties and seven lead changes to decide the winner of a 32-30 final in set three, but UC Davis emerged as the victor on .241 hitting (18k, 4e) on 58 attacks. USC had 15 kills (8e) on 50 attempts to hit .140 led by five kills from Tvrdy and four from Faumuina. Service errors plagued both sides of the net, but the teams produced 51 digs with USC in front, 26-25. Wijay had seven, Etter had six, and Faumuina had five to lead the defensive effort.
- It took another eight ties and a pair of lead changes—the last of which proved crucial—for the Trojans to close out a 28-26 win in set four to seal the match. Ostovar had four of her kills in the final frame and scored the last two points of the match on crosscourt kills. USC put up three blocks in the fourth to keep the Aggies at .178 hitting (16k, 8e) on 45 swings while hitting .222 itself with 12 kills (4e) on 36 attacks. The Trojans led by as many as four, 14-10, and had a three-point lead at 23-20, but the hard-charging Aggies equalized at 23-all and even had set point at 25-24.
- USC stays home to host Pepperdine (7-3) on Saturday (Sept. 19) at 7 p.m. PT and UC Santa Barbara (4-5) on Sunday (Sept. 20) at 2 p.m. Both matches will be shown live on Big Ten Plus.
