Bio
THIS SEASON: Maddie Wright, a 2019 senior and two-time All-American, is one of the top butterflyers in the country who will battle again to be an NCAA point scorer while also striving for her first conference title. She is a proven scorer in dual meets and the postseason in both the 100y and 200y fly and is also a solid option in the 200y and 500y freestyle.
2018: Wright, as a 2018 junior, repeated as a first-team All-American in the 200y fly at the NCAA Championships, taking sixth in 1:53.40 after a 1:53.17 in prelims. She also raced in the 100y fly, finishing 23rd in 52.37 … At the 2018 Pac-12 Championships, Wright was a two-time finalist and swam in her third consecutive A final, finishing fourth in 1:53.38. She raced in her second straight 100y fly final, finishing eighth in 52.56 … Wright won the 200y fly (1:54.97) at the SMU Classic, helping USC win the six-team event by 1.5 points … She represented the Pac-12 in the USA College Challenge, finishing third in the 200y fly (1:55.09) … For the second year in a row, Wright earned Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention honors.
2017: Wright became a first-time All-American as a 2017 sophomore, finishing fifth at the NCAA Championships in the 200y fly in 1:53.39, just 0.25 out of third. She was also 37th in the 100y fly (52.97) and raced in the 500y free … Wright was a two-time finalist at the 2017 Pac-12s, posting a PR 1:52.67 to take second in the 200y fly while she finished eighth in the 100y fly (52.30) after a PR 52.19 in prelims. She was also 15th in the 500y free (4:43.49) with a PR 4:43.30 in prelims ... She won the 200y fly five times in dual meet action during the season … Wright raced at the 2017 U.S. Summer Nationals, finishing third in the B final of the 200m fly in 2:10.74. She was 27th in the 100m fly and raced in the 400m free ... Wright earned Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention honors.
2016: Wright had a strong first year as a Trojan, competing in three events at the 2016 NCAA Championships after a finalist appearance at the conference level. At the NCAAs, Wright finished 20th in the 200y fly (1:56.42) and was 42nd in the 100y fly (53.63), posting season-bests in both events. She was also 52nd in the 500y free (4:46.70) ... At the 2016 Pac-12 Championships, she was an A finalist in the 200y fly, taking sixth (1:56.60), and was a two-time B finalist, finishing 13th in the 500y free (4:45.29, PR) and 15th in the 100y fly (53.98) ... She had a strong showing at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, reaching the semifinals of the 200m fly, where she finished 13th in 2:12.11 after going 2:12.31 to qualify for the semis.
HIGH SCHOOL: Wright prepped at Waterford Kettering High in Waterford, Mich., where she was a two-time Michigan state champion in the 100y fly (54.51) and the 200y free (1:49.30) as a senior ... She was a member of the 2014-2015 USA Swimming Junior National team ... Wright is a former national age group record holder in the 200y fly (11-12) ... At the 2014 U.S. Summer Juniors, she was fourth in 200m fly final (2:12.33) ... Before high school, she competed at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 200m fly, finishing 24th.
