Men's Water Polo Dominates UC Irvine, 10-1

LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 USC men's water polo team defeated No. 5 UC Irvine for the 11th consecutive time in dominating fashion, 10-1, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest on Saturday at the McDonald's Swim Stadium.
Senior 2-meter man Peter Janov, junior driver Stever O'Rourke and senior driver Allen Basso each scored two goals to lead USC.
It was the third straight win for the Trojans, who improved their overall record to 8-1 and 2-0 in MPSF play. The loss was the fifth in the last six matches for UC Irvine (3-6, 0-3).
It was a superb offensive afternoon for the Trojans, who utilized excellent perimeter passing to create open scoring chances that led to a 7-0 halftime lead. It was an all-around attack as well, as the Trojans' 10 goals on the afternoon were scored by seven different players.
Defensively, senior goalie Richard McEvoy made seven saves on the day, and came close to recording a shutout, but senior driver Mike Allaire scored UCI's only goal of the day with just five seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
USC next takes part in the Northern California Tournament at Stanford next weekend (Oct. 9-10).
