PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 8 Stanford women's soccer team took over the inside track to the Pacific-10 Conference title on Sunday afternoon, defeating No. 7 USC, 3-2, at New Maloney Field.
USC is now 12-4 overall and 5-1 in the Pac-10, one game back of the Cardinal (13-3, 6-0). The loss snapped USC's season-high six-match winning streak, and a string of 12 straight conference wins dating back to last season.
USC was without head coach Jim Millinder, who received a red card during Friday's victory at California and had to sit in the stands for Sunday's contest.
The Women of Troy started well, scoring in the 8th minute as senior midfielder Kim Clark's corner kick from the left side bounced through the box and found its way to freshman midfielder Ali Fennell, who poked it in.
The Cardinal came back with a 13th minute goal, however, as junior midfielder Shauna Itri blasted a shot that curled just inside the right post from about 30 yards out.
USC regained the lead just after halftime. Junior midfielder Isabelle Harvey was pulled down in the penalty box just 21 seconds into the second half, and she converted the penalty kick for a 2-1 lead.
However, that was the only shot of the second half for USC, which struggled to solve Stanford's defense. The Cardinal had a 17-4 shot advantage overall (11-1 in the second half).
The Cardinal scored the tying and go-ahead goals just 1:33 apart, as senior midfielder Ronnie Fair scored on a perfectly placed free kick from just outside the penalty box at 71:22, and freshman midfielder Becky Myers hit a blast from 25 yards out from the right side at 72:55 for the game-winner.
It was a physical match, as a total of 35 fouls were called, 21 on USC (as well as two yellow cards on the Women of Troy).
USC continues on the road next weekend, visiting Oregon (Friday, Oct. 29) and Oregon State (Sunday, Oct. 31).
