LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Sam Clancy scored 24 points and Brine Scalabrine added 18 points Friday night as USC jumped out to a lead midway through the first half against Cal State Northridge and held on for a 73-59 win.
Clancy scored six points for USC (1-0, 0-0) in the 12-5 run that gave the Trojans the go-ahead lead. The Trojans were ahead 37-22 at halftime and started the second half with a pair of 3-pointers from Jeff Trepagnier. He finished with 14 points and was 2-for-5 in 3-point attempts. Clancy and Scalabrine also led the Trojans in rebounds, pulling in eight apiece.
The Matadors (0-1, 0-0) were led by Carl Holmes, who scored 14 points, and Brian Heinle, who had 12 points and five rebounds. USC was outscored in the second half, 37-36, but managed to hold on to its first half lead.
With less than five minutes to play, USC opened it largest lead of the game, 66-46, but Northridge closed the gap somewhat. Neither team was able to establish much of a rhythm due to numerous fouls and turnovers committed by both sides. CS Northridge turned the ball over 27 times compared to USC's18. The Matadors also felt the absence of Andre Larry, who served the first game of a two-game suspension for playing in a non-sanctioned summer basketball league. USC will face No. 5 North Carolina on Monday in the Maui Invitational.
