GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Top-seeded Zuzana Lesenarova of San Diego becomes the eighth No. 1 seed to advance to the NCAA Singles Championships in the 18-year history of event by virtue of her 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 victory over USC's Ditta Huber.
Lesenarova, a junior from Novy Vicin, Czech Republic cruised to a 6-1 win in the first set behind a dominating serve. She did not lose a point in three of the four games she served in the first set. The sixth-seeded Huber then jumped out to a 4-1 lead en route to a 6-3 win in the second set. Lesenarova, who is now 38-5 on the year, ended any hopes of a Huber comeback with a 6-0 blanking in the third set. Lesenarova, who already owns Collegiate Grand Slam wins at the national Clay Courts Championships and the Riviera All-American Championship, will face third-seeded Marissa Irvin of Stanford in the finals at 1 p.m. on Friday.
Lesenarova, who plays in the doubles semifinals later Thursday afternoon, is looking to become just the fourth top-seed to win the NCAA Singles Championship (1987, 1991 and 1993).
Huber finishes her career with a 36-18 record.
