Men's Golf Completes Final Round

ORINDA, Calif. -- Arizona State freshman Paul Casey took Pac-10 medalist honors and headed a list of three Sun Devils to shoot under par as ASU overcame a five-stroke California lead during Wednesday's fourth and final round to win its record-tying fourth consecutive Pac-10 Men's Golf Title, ninth overall. USC, which dominated Pac-10 golf prior to the entry of Arizona and Arizona State into the conference, also won four straight titles from 1964-67.
"One of your first goals is always to give yourself a chance to win the conference championship," said a victorious ASU head coach Randy Lein. "These freshmen have been indoctrinated since they started. To be behind by as many as we were, and for these freshmen to light it up the way they did is very gratifying and I'm very happy."
Arizona State trailed Cal by 21-strokes after Monday's first and second round. But hot golf by the Sun Devils -- a combined 13-under during the final two rounds -- plus a fourth round total of 18-over 378 by Cal was enough to test the top spot from the Bears.
Cal, which held the lead for the tournament's first three rounds, dropped to fourth as both UCLA (1455) and Arizona (1459) moved past the bears to finish in third and fourth respectively. Making one of the biggest jumps on the day was Washington (1476), which moved all the way from ninth to fifth place.
Individually, Cal's Dan Arroyo finished in a two-way tie for second place with Stanford's Joel Kribel at 3-under 285. ASU's Jin Park placed fourth, while Jorge Corral moved from 17th all the way to fifth thanks to a final round 5-under 67.
The Pac-10 conference will release its men's golf all-conference selections Thursday, April 30.
