ORINDA -- The California Men's golf team could muster only a combined 7-over-par 367 Tuesday, but that was good enough to hold on to first place after three rounds of play at the Pac-10 Men's Golf Championship.
"If you told me we'd have a five shot lead going in the final round and be leading two of the country's best collegiate teams, I'd definitely have taken it," said Cal head coach Steve Desimone. "We've had our bad round now. It's behind us. I think we'll come out and play better tomorrow."
Cal's combined three round total of 3-over-par 1083 is only five strokes better than Arizona State (1088), which made a huge charge during the third round with a combined 9-under-par 351 effort. Arizona (1090) and Stanford (1096) finished Tuesday's play in third and fourth respectively, with Oregon (1100) and UCLA (1100) in a two-way tie for fifth.
Individually, California junior Dan Arroyo played even-par golf and leads at 8-under-par 209. Arroyo scorched the Orinda Country Club course Monday with a two-round total of 8-under 136.
In second place, just one stroke behind Arroyo, is Stanford's Joel Kribel. Kribel, who fired 69 and 70 to end the first day's play at 5-under 139, was again under par during the third round with his second consecutive 70.
Jin Park of Arizona State carded the day's lowest score, 6-under 66, and jumped from seventh to third. Oregon State's Anthony Arvidson and Washington's Brian Nosler rounded out the top-5 in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
The Pac-10 Men's Golf Championship will conclude tomorrow with the fourth and final round of play at Orinda. Galleries are welcome, admission is free, and play will begin from the No. 1 tee at 8:00 a.m. and No. 10 tee at 8:21 a.m.
