
Trojans Take Sixth at Pac-10 Men's Golf Championships

SEATTLE -- Paul Casey fired a 10-under-par course-record 60 in the final round of the Pac-10 Men's Golf Championships to lead Arizona State to its fifth-straight conference title. Casey recorded 11 birdies in his record-setting effort on the 6,186-yard, par-70 course at Broadmoor Golf Club to secure medalist honors for the second-straight season with a 15-under 72-hole total of 265. The Sun Devils finished the tournament with a Pac-10 record 3-over 1403. UCLA was second, 21 strokes off the pace with a 1424.
Casey's final round 60 is believed to be a collegiate record. Stanford's Tiger Woods shot an 11-under par 61 at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, Calif. during the 1996 Pac-10 Championships.
Washington carded 1440 to finish fourth after posting 365 in Wednesday's final round. The Huskies were led by the fouth place finish of freshman Troy Kelly who registered his second-straight 72 in the final round, finishing with a 1-over 281 over 72 holes. Gordy Scutt also notched a top-10 finish by carding an even par 70 to finish with a 2-over 282 in a three-way tie for sixth place. Scott Kral finshed in 26th with a 12-over 292 after a 77, three strokes ahead of 33rd place Rob Rashell who totaled 295. Brett Bockmann completed his best tournament of the season with a 74 to finish 39th overall with a 297. Robb Bergeson was tied for 45th with a 300.
Casey entered the day down eight strokes to Stanford's Joel Kribel who carded an even-par 70 in his final round and ended up in second place with a 13-under-par 267. Casey was 5-under after a bogey on hole nine, before going to nine-under with a birdie on the 16th. The ASU sophomore hit the green in two on the par-5 18th and two putted for birdie. UCLA's Jeff McGraw finished third with a 1-under 279.
Oregon carded a 358 to drop into third place at 1427, 13 strokes better than fourth place Washington which edged California's 1441 by one stroke. USC took sixth with a 1450 and Stanford took seventh at 1454. Arizona posted 1463 to beat Oregon State's 1464 for eighth. Washington State finshed 10th with 1501.
Washington plays in the U.S. Intercollegiate May 6-8 at Stanford Golf Course.
