The Trojans closed out their fall slate with their third straight top-three finish.
ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The USC Men's Golf Team finished the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational on Sunday, placing third in a tough 14-team field. Four Trojans finished in the top 30, led by Deitrek Gill, who tied for seventh.
The Trojans fired a 284 (-4) on the par-72, 7,017-yard track to finish with an 850 (-14), which was two strokes behind champion No. 15 Georgia Tech. USC held the lead on the back nine but could not hold on to win its first tournament of the season. The Trojans led the field in par-3 scoring average and tied for the most birdies made.
"I'm really proud of the guys this weekend," said Head Coach Mark Hankins. "It was a good performance in a tough field. We battled back and had the lead at one point on the back nine today and it just came down to a couple of shots here and there. But I'm really proud of the guys."
Individually, Gill led the Trojans, finishing tied for seventh. His round of 68 (-4) on Sunday jumped him up seven spots on the leaderboard. Gill got off to a hot start, making five birdies in his first eight holes, going out in 31 (-5). He added another birdie on No. 13 but closed with bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17.
"We had a different wind today, so it honestly felt like a completely different course," Gill said. "I got out to a really hot start, made some putts early, hit some really good shots and then I kind of slowed down after that. It was a solid performance today."
Gill finished as one of just seven golfers in the 78-player field to post a par-3 scoring average of even par or better. In his three tournaments this fall, Gill finished in the top 10 each time.
"I've felt good about my game for a while now, so I was really confident headed into this tournament," Gill said. "I've been confident about all the parts of my game. I've been putting really well lately."
Junior Jack Buchanan wrapped up his fall with his second 10th-place finish of the season, shooting an even-par 72 on Sunday. After a second-round 66 (-6), Buchanan sat in sixth entering Sunday's final round. He birdied Nos. 2 and 8 to make the turn at 7 under before finishing with consecutive bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17.
Junior Jaden Dumdumaya and sophomore Joshua Hong both finished tied for 27th at 2-over 218. Dumdumaya climbed 21 spots on Sunday with a final-round 71 (-1). He began his round with birdies on Nos. 1 and 2 before making a bogey on his fifth hole of the day. He later birdied Nos. 9 and 18, with bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11 in between.
Hong struggled Sunday, shooting a final-round 78 (+6). After opening with consecutive rounds of 70, he dropped 17 spots into a tie for 27th.
Rounding out the Trojans, senior Nicolas Dominguez finished tied for 72nd with a closing-round 73.
The Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational concluded USC's fall schedule. The Trojans placed in the top five in all four tournaments, including top-three finishes in each of their final three events.
"We had four great tournaments this fall, and I am really looking forward to the spring," Hankins said. "We have a great schedule lined up, and I can't wait to keep getting better as a team."
