Diaz Wins Back Draw At ASU Invitational

Tempe, Ariz. -- Sophomore Anita Loyola, along with newcomers Bernadette Bayani and Maureen Diaz competed at the 2000 Arizona State Thunderbirds Invitational last week, Oct. 5-7. Diaz, a transfer from UC Irvine, advanced the furthest, winning the consolation round singles title by defeating Celena McCoury of Arizona State - the same title Loyola garnered in 1999.
Diaz entered the consolation round after falling to Kaysie Smashey of Texas, 6-7 (2), 4-6. The sophomore then earned wins over Perrine Pernin of Arizona, Lisa Swierniak of Cal, Jennifer Baker of ASU and McCoury in the championship match.
Bayani, a freshman who entered as the tournament's seventh seed, fell to Catherine Heppell of San Diego, 2-6, 2-6, in the first round. She advanced to the semifinals of the conosolation round by default, but was then defeated by Nicole Havlicak of Cal, 4-6, 5-7.
Loyola, last years consolation champion, advanced to the second round of the main draw by defeating Charlotte Vernaz of Pepperdine, 6-1, 6-2. With a quarterfinal loss, Loyola was moved to the back draw and eventually eliminated in the semifinals by Kaysie Smashey of Texas, 5-7, 2-6.
In doubles, Diaz and Loyola defeated Arizona State's Baker and Sureephong, before falling to Pepperdine's Mueller and Palencia, 3-8.
