USC improves to 2-0. San Diego falls to 1-1. It was the first ever meeting between the two schools.
For only the second game in his career, Brian Scalabrine failed to score a point. The other time was at Arizona in the 1998-99 season.
With his six assists, Brandon Granville is now second on USC's all-time assist chart with 403. He needs six more to tie Larry Friend.
David Bluthenthal made his first four free throws, before missing his fifth, setting the USC and Pac-10 record for consecutive free throws made at 41. The old USC record was 37 by John Block in 1966 and the old Pac-10 record was 40 shared by John Greig in 1981-82 and Todd Lichti in 1989.
Post Game Quotes from USC Coach Henry Bibby
"We were tired and so sluggish and we haven't really practiced hard this week so we haven't done anything to be tired. I'm at a loss for words. But a win is a win.
"Some guys played well. Jarvis gave us a big lift. Hutchinson and Murphy came off the bench and played well. The bench kept us in the game.
"San Diego outplayed us. They didn't get rattled. They thought they could win.
"It was ugly the way we got it down to four points. That's what I'm concerned with. We'd give up easy layups. San Diego was very effective and well coached.
"We're a long ways from being a good basketball team. We can't come out and relax. We've got to put pressure on them. Our defense let down tonight.
"I've never seen Scalabrine never score and foul out in 11 minutes.
"I don't know why we had such a slow start. The last time I subbed all five guys out so fast was when I was coaching in Puerto Rico. I wanted to get their attention."
Post Game Quotes from San Diego Coach Brad Holland
(On whether San Diego missed a chance tonight after USC's slow start) "USC got off to a slow start because we were playing well. This was a winnable game. If we made a few more foul shots and a couple other shots here and there, we win. It's discouraging. USC is quick and they presented problems to us, but our team played well. This game should motivate us. We played well against a ranked team on the road.
"USC's a talented team. They are quick and they are good. No one in our program thought for a minute that we'd keep that 10, 12, 13 point lead for the whole game. We knew they'd make a run. We got in foul trouble and had to shift our lineup a bit and that hurt us, but we gave ourselves a good chance tonight.
"We were on the road in a hostile environment against a ranked team. We had 23 turnovers and we still had a chance to win if we make our foul shots."
