LOS ANGELES -- Right fielder Rob Garibaldi's three-run home run, his first of the season, to right center capped a four-run first inning as the No. 9 USC Trojans defeated the University of San Diego Toreros, 7-3, in a non-conference game Tuesday at Dedeaux Field.
Garibaldi went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI for the Trojans, who improved to 7-3 on the season. Mark Prior, the designated pitcher, picked up his second win of the season (2-1) while USD pitcher Ryan Hamilton (2-2) took the loss for the Toreros (9-6-1). USC pitcher Rik Currier pitched three innings of one-hit ball, striking out five batters and walking two.
The Trojans led off the first inning on a double by center fielder Brian Barre. After going to third on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Seth Davidson, Barre scored on an RBI single by second baseman Anthony Lunetta. Third baseman Justin Gemoll walked with two outs before Garibaldi hit the three-run homer.
USC pitchers allowed only two hits, including a solo home run by the Toreros' Joe Lima in the ninth inning, a solo shot.
The Trojans will host the UCLA Bruins this weekend in a non-conference series, beginning on Friday, Feb. 25, at 5 p.m. at Dedeaux Field.
