BERKELEY, Calif. - Southern California trailed by two points before the game even began, and things never got much better for the Trojans.
Solomon Hughes had 16 points as California, which shot two pregame free throws after a technical was called on the Trojans during warmups, defeated Southern California 86-73 Saturday night in a battle of teams clinging to postseason hopes.
Raymond King added 14 points for California (16-11, 7-8 Pac-10) and Sean Lampley had 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. The Bears shot 52 percent from the field and made 8 of their 16 attempts from 3-point range.
David Bluthenthal had 17 points and eight rebounds for the Trojans (14-14, 7-9), who have lost eight of nine. Sam Clancy, playing in his second game since returning from a broken right foot that sidelined him for six weeks, had 13 points.
Southern California's Jeff Trepagnier was called for a technical for hanging on the rim during warmups. Donte Smith hit the two free throws before the game began, and King had seven points as California jumped out to a 17-5 lead.
Cal maintained its lead throughout the rest of the first half, though Clancy's layup just before halftime pulled the Trojans within 47-40.
Southern California pulled within a point when Brian Scalabrine's layup cut the Cal lead to 67-66 with 4:35 remaining in the second half.
But Ryan Forehan-Kelly responded with a four-point play - he was fouled while hitting a 3-pointer from in front of the Cal bench - and King added a length-of-the-court layup as the Bears pulled away.
The Trojans were held to 8-of-25 shooting on 3-pointers in the game.
