USC vs. Washington State -- Washington State and USC have met five times since the series began in 1994. The Trojans remain undefeated with a 5-0 record against the Cougars, including a 5-1 victory at Pullman in 1999. This season, Washington State owns a 10-9 overall record (1-5 Pac-10) after collecting two losses last week against Arizona and Arizona State by identical 7-2 scores.
USC vs. Washington -- Since their first meeting in 1993, the Trojans own a 7-0 record against the Huskies. Last season, USC defeated Washington, 6-2, in Seattle. This season, Washington owns a 11-7 overall record (3-3 Pac-10) after defeating Arizona State, 5-4, on Friday, and falling to Arizona, 7-2, on Saturday.
The Trojans' Last Outing -- The Trojans suffered a 5-4 loss to eighth-ranked Cal on Friday (April 7). The Golden Bears began the afternoon with wins at No. 1 and 2, but USC answered with the next three consecutive victories. To begin the Trojans' run, Veronika Safarova earned a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Claire Curran. Cal then tied the match, 3-3, with a victory at No. 6. After dropping the first doubles match, 8-1, a victory by Caroline Christian and Safarova at No. 3 brought the score to three apiece, allowing the outcome to be decided at the No. 2 spot. In the final match, Anita Loyola and Jacqui Boyd jumped out to a 2-0 lead, only to see Cal's Curran and Amy Jensen claim the 8-4 victory.
On Saturday (April 8), USC endured a 6-1 loss to No.1 Stanford. The Women of Troy's lone victory was a 6-3, 6-3 upset at the No. 3 singles position. Unranked Veronika Safarova defeated Stanford's sixth-ranked Lauren Kalvaria. The Cardinal claimed the No. 1, 2, 4 and 5 singles matches in straight sets, and the No. 6 match in three. After a loss at No. 2 doubles, the other two matches were never played.
USC News & Notes -- Senior Jacqui Boyd owns the team's longest win streak of the season in dual matches, having won 11-straight singles matches between Jan. 18 and Feb. 26... USC advanced to the USTA/ITA championship quarterfinals for the first time since 1997... The Women of Troy are 2-4 against top-25 opponents this season.
Head Coach Richard Gallien -- Richard Gallien enters his fifth season at the helm of the USC women's tennis program. After guiding the 1999 Trojans to a 21-9 overall record, and a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAAs, he was named Pac-10 Co-Coach of the Year. Gallien began his career at Pepperdine, coaching the men's team for three years, before joining the Trojan family. Over the last eight years, he has compiled a 135-75 (.643) overall record and his teams have made four appearances in the NCAA tournament.
