BERKELEY, Calif. -- Freshman David Weiner's two-run homer in the eighth off starter Mark Prior broke a 5-5 tie Saturday as the California Bears defeated the No. 19 USC Trojans, 9-5, in Pac-10 Conference play. Mike Tonis added another two-run homer in a four-run inning for the Bears.
The Bears (19-20, 7-7) scored five runs in the second (four of them unearned) to take a 5-1 lead, but the Trojans (25-14, 7-4) battled back with three runs in the third.
USC had a runner at first with two outs in the top of the eighth, but Seth Davidson was caught stealing at second to end the threat.
David Cash picked up the win with three innings of two-hit ball, allowing one unearned run to improve to 6-3 on the season. Prior dropped to 5-5 with 7 and 1/3 innings of work with seven runs (three earned) on nine hits. He struck out six batters and walked five.
The series finale is scheduled for tomorrow at 1 p.m. (weather permitting).
