Women of Troy Face Pac-10 Leaders

This Week -- The 11th-ranked USC women's tennis team (15-6, 4-2 Pac-10) is currently fourth in the Pac-10 standings after posting two victories over Washington State, 6-3, and Washington, 5-4, last week. The team stands just one win away from a possible second place finish. This week, USC will travel to Stanford (1st in Pac-10) on Friday, April 21, and Cal (2nd in Pac-10) on Saturday, April 22, for its last two matches of the regular season.
USC vs. Stanford -- Stanford owns a 39-17 all-time record against the Trojans. In the last meeting, USC fell to the Cardinal, 6-1, at home. With a 23-0 overall record and 6-0 Pac-10 mark, Stanford is currently first in the conference. Last week, they defeated Arizona and Arizona State by identical 7-1 scores.
USC vs. California -- The all-time series record stands at 20-18 in USC's favor against the Golden Bears. In their last meeting, Cal defeated the Women of Troy, 5-4, at home. So far this season, the Bears are 16-5 overall and 5-1 in conference play. Last week they defeated Arizona State, 7-1, on Friday, and Arizona, 8-0, on Saturday.
The Trojans' Last Outing -- The Women of Troy broke a three-match losing slump to start the week with a 6-3 win over Washington State. The Cougars began the match earning the first point at No. 1, then watched the Trojans win the next four consecutive singles matches to take a 4-1 lead. The score came within three (4-2) with a USC loss at No. 6, before heading into doubles play where first-time pairs Jewel Peterson and Kara Warkentin clinched the match for the Women of Troy with a 8-1 win over Filipovic and Pine.
USC won a tiebreaker in the final doubles match for a 5-4 victory over Washington on Saturday. After dropping the No. 1 singles match, the Women of Troy came back to earn victories at the No. 2, 3, 5 and 6 positions. USC held a 4-2 lead heading into doubles play, but quickly saw the score come to four apiece when the Huskies earned wins in the first two completed matches. The match was decided at center court as Warkentin and Tiffany Brymer pushed No. 43 Kraszewski and Darija Klaic to a tiebreaker, then prevailed with a 9-8, 8-6 final score.
USC News & Notes -- Senior Jacqui Boyd owns the team's longest win streak of the season in dual matches, having won 11-straight singles matches between Jan. 18 and Feb. 26... USC advanced to the USTA/ITA championship quarterfinals for the first time since 1997... The Women of Troy are 2-4 against top-25 opponents this season.
Head Coach Richard Gallien -- Richard Gallien enters his fifth season at the helm of the USC women's tennis program. After guiding the 1999 Trojans to a 21-9 overall record, and a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAAs, he was named Pac-10 Co-Coach of the Year. Gallien began his career at Pepperdine, coaching the men's team for three years, before joining the Trojan family. Over the last eight years, he has compiled a 137-75 (.646) overall record and his teams have made four appearances in the NCAA tournament.
Next Up -- The Women of Troy will compete at the Pac-10 Championships next week (April 27-29) at Ojai, Calif.
