Los Angeles, Calif. -- The 12th-ranked USC women's tennis team (16-8) swept the Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers (20-7), 5-0, in the first round of the 2000 NCAA championship regional, this afternoon (May 13) at Marks Tennis Stadium. With the win, the Women of Troy advance to the second round to face Pac-10-rival Arizona. The match will be played tomorrow, May 14, at 1 p.m.
Freshman Tiffany Brymer was the first to finish for the Trojans with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Karina Molsing at the No. 6 position. The win marked Brymer's second sweep of the 1999-2000 season. Veronika Safarova, Jewel Peterson and Jacqui Boyd each followed with identical 6-1, 6-1 victories at courts two through four. Freshman Anita Loyola completed the match with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Karen Prangley for USC's match-winning point.
"I was really happy with the way we played this afternoon," said USC head coach Richard Gallien. "Considering we played the last match and waited until 4:30 p.m. to get on the court, we really played sharp, there was no complacency, and we showed a real hunger to win."
The winner of the USC-Arizona second round match will advance to the NCAA championship quarterfinals to be held in Malibu, Calif., beginning on Friday, May 19.
