Freshman Candie Kung shot a Women of Troy record 65 in the second round to help lead the No. 3 USC women's golf team to a third place finish at the 2000 NCAA West Regional held at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. this past Thursday-Saturday.
USC shot 888, 12 strokes back of champion Arizona (876) and seven behind San Jose State (881). Tourney host Arizona State finished fourth (889), followed by TCU in fifth (892).
Kung, who is the 2000 Pac-10 individual champion, came out of the gates slowly with a 75 first round on Thursday, but the freshman rebounded with a fury on Friday by shooting a tourney-low round of 65. The mark broke the Women of Troy record of 66 set by Jennifer Rosales in 1998 at the NCAA Championships (which Rosales won). Kung came back on Saturday and shot a 71 to finish with 211--the second lowest 54-hole score in school history after Rosales' 207 (also set at the 1998 NCAA Championships). Overall, Kung finished as tourney runner up--just two strokes back of Miriam Nagl of Arizona State (209).
Also for USC, sophomore Leila Chartrand finished tied for 15th (221), freshman Mikaela Parmlid finished tied for 46th (227), senior Linda Ishii finished tied for 61st (229) and junior Nicole Dalkas came in at 126th (254).
The top 13 teams and top three individuals from non-qualifying teams advanced to the NCAA Championships from the NCAA West Regional, while 11 teams and three individuals advanced from the East Regional which was held at the Ohio State University. USC wraps up its season in two weeks when the team heads to the NCAA Championships, being held May 24-27 at the Crosswater Golf Course in Sunriver, Ore.
