Opelika, Ala. - The USC men's golf team shot 300 on Thursday, but failed to make the final cut at the 2000 NCAA Men's Golf Championships being held at Grand National Golf Course in Opelika, Ala., on May 31-June 3 (Wed.-Sat.)
The Trojans head home in 29th place with a two-day total of 599 (+23), 17 strokes away from qualifying for the finals and 42 strokes behind first-place Oklahoma State.
Individually, walk-on junior Alex Kuyumjian led the Trojans by finishing tied for 86th (74, 74--148). Junior Nick Jones was tied for 120th (73, 78--151), freshman David Oh tied for 136 (76, 77--153), senior Nick Webb tied for 143rd (83, 71--154) and sophomore Kevin Stadler tied for 146th (76, 79--155).
USC has reason to be optimistic heading into next year: the American Junior Golf Association's 1999 Player of the Year, Hunter Mahan, has signed to become a Trojan. Add to that the loss of only one golfer who played at the NCAAs (Webb) and USC has the potential to make giant strides in 2000-2001.
