LOS ANGELES -- Dave Lawn -- an assistant at California the past 10 years -- has been named an assistant coach for the USC baseball team, head coach Mike Gillespie announced today.
Lawn replaces John Savage, who took the head coaching position at UC Irvine.
"We are very fortunate to have Dave in our program," said Gillespie. "He is known to be at the forefront of pitching coaches in the nation in terms of his abilities. He is an outstanding recruiter and his experience will enhance our staff."
Lawn, 36, served as the assistant coach in charge of recruiting and pitching at California since 1991. He was instrumental in recruiting 1998 National Freshman of the Year Xavier Nady, a first round draft pick in 2000, and his recruiting classes have been ranked in the Top 30 nationally from 1991 to 1998.
In his first season at California, Lawn was part of a staff that led the team to the 1991 NCAA Midwest Regional final. The following year, the Bears won the East Regional championship and advanced to the 1992 College World Series.
Prior to his stint at California, Lawn was the pitching coach and top recruiter at Nevada for two seasons (1989-90) as the Wolf Pack recorded back-to-back 30-win seasons. He was also the pitching coach at Contra Costa College in 1987 and 1988.
He graduated from San Francisco State in 1986 and pitched one year at UC Santa Barbara before suffering a career-ending arm injury.
A native of El Cerrito, Lawn and his wife, Stacey, have a daughter, Mackenzie, and two sons, Michael and Matthew.
