Brook Billings Leads Trojans To Win Over UC Santa Barbara

LOS ANGELES - Junior All-American opposite hitter Brook Billings came off the bench to post a match-high 20 kills to help the No. 8-ranked USC men's volleyball team snap a 3-match losing streak with a 30-22, 27-30, 30-28, 29-31, 15-12 win over No. 6 UC Santa Barbara in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday (Feb. 10) in the USC North Gym.
USC improved to 4-3 both overall and in MPSF play, while the Gauchos fell to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the MPSF.
Billings sat out USC's first 2 games for disciplinary reasons, but was inserted into the lineup at the start of the third game. He hit .448 overall.
Four other Trojans recorded double figures in kills: senior outside hitter Eli Fairfield had 14 kills plus 5 blocks and a match-best 12 digs, sophomore middle blocker Mark Dusharme had 13 kills while hitting .364 to go along with a team-best 6 blocks, senior outside hitter Trevor Julian had 12 kills and sophomore middle blocker Josh Day had 10 kills while hitting a match-high .533.
For UCSB, sophomore opposite hitter Ben Koski had 17 kills and 5 blocks, junior outside hitter David Kohl had 15 kills and 8 digs, and sophomore outside hitter Brian Norberg had 10 kills and 5 blocks while hitting a team-best .438. Soph middle blocker Anders Bengtsson had a match-high 10 blocks and senior libero Shane Johnston had a team-best 9 digs.
The Trojans outhit the Gauchos, .331 to .235, but UCSB had more blocks, 19.0 to 10.5.
In the fourth game, USC had leads of 25-21 and then 28-26, but UCSB battled back to take the game. In the decisive fifth game, the Trojans were down 8-6 before scoring 4 points in a row to gain control.
USC's next match is an MPSF contest on Friday (Feb. 16) at Cal State Northridge, starting at 7 p.m.
