Game Notes:
USC falls to 17-7 overall, 7-5 in conference. Arizona improves to 18-7 and 10-3.
This equals the fourth-largest margin of defeat in USC history behind a 63-point road loss (77-14) to the Los Angeles Athletic Club in 1914, a 55-point road loss (68-13) to Whittier in 1916, a 46-point road loss (54-8) to the Los Angeles YMCA in 1917, and equaling a pair of 44-point road losses: 92-48 at Arizona in 1988 and 61-17 at Los Angeles Athletic Club in 1918. It is the largest margin of defeat at home by USC, surpassing a season-ending 37-point loss to UCLA in 1966. It is USC's biggest margin of defeat since last year's 43-point loss (11-68) at Stanford. Arizona's 105 points is also the most point given up by USC at home.
USC shot a season-low 29.9% (20-67) from the field, including 17.6% (6-34) in the first half.
Arizona made 14-19 from 3-point land (73.7%). It was the most 3-pointers made against USC since BYU-Hawaii also sunk 14 against the Trojans back on Dec. 21.
Gilbert Arenas was 8-9 from the field (he made his first 8), including 5-5 on 3-pointers and 6-6 free throws for 27 points overall.
Sam Clancy scored 3 points, his lowest output of the season. He did not score a field goal in a game for the first time since the last game of the 1998-99 season (when he was a freshman).
For the first time in his USC career, Brandon Granville did not have an assist.
With his 20 points Brian Scalabrine passes Gus Williams into eighth place on the USC all-time scoring chart with 1320.
Post Game Quotes From USC Coach Henry Bibby
"There's not one thing to take from this game. We'll just take the loss and be happy it wasn't by 60. We weren't ready to play and they made their shots. Brian Scalabrine was really trying and Desmond Farmer played with emotion and wanted to win. But no one else came to play. You do that against a top team and you see what happens.
"We've been an up and down team all season. I thought we were going to be pretty good today but we didn't respond. When you play against a real good team you get exposed when everyone doesn't play well. We didn't play defense and they made their shots.
"There was no place I could go. I wish I could have climbed under the table. Maybe today was the time I should have got ejected.
"To drop a game at home and to do it like this is deflating. We weren't consistent. It can't be any worse than this."
Post Game Quotes From Arizona Coach Lute Olson
"It just goes to show you what happens when you shoot the ball well. We looked great out there today. We were patient and waited for the shot. When we do that, we play well. It was a case where we couldn't miss a shot and they couldn't buy a shot.
"We did a good job of keeping the ball out of Clancy's hands. We also were worried about Trepagnier's offensive rebounding and we did a good job there. We played solid defense and it seemed like they couldn't throw the ball in the ocean even with wide open looks. At one point, we were 14 of 16 from 3-point territory and that's just too much for a team to overcome if they are not shooting well.
"USC is a very good team. I like their balance and they play well together. Today it was just a case of us shooting the lights out and them not being able to make shots."
