Jewel Peterson Wins 2002 Pac-10 Indoor Championship

SEATTLE, Wash. -- USC junior Jewel Peterson won her first Pac-10 Indoor Championship by defeating Stanford's Lauren Barnikow, 6-4, 6-1, on Sunday, Jan. 20. The Women of Troy were well represented in the championship rounds of the 2002 tournament, advancing three singles and one doubles to the finals.
By defeating Barnikow, the second-seeded Peterson claimed the Flight I singles championship. In Flight II singles, Jieun Jacobs of Cal defeated USC freshman Luana Magnani in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 to win the title. The Flight III singles champion was Lauren Fisher of UCLA who defeated the Trojans' Bernadette Bayani, 6-1, 6-1.
Bayani and Maureen Diaz represented the Women of Troy in the Flight II doubles championship but fell Catherine Hawley and Sarah Gregg of UCLA, 8-5 for the title.
The Trojans begin the regular season this week when they host UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday, Jan. 22, and UC Irvine on Thursday, Jan. 24. Both matches will be played at Marks Tennis Stadium and will begin at 1:30 p.m.
