Tempe, Ariz. - The No. 11 USC women's golf team shot a 13-over 877 this past weekend to finish second in the 54-hole Ping/ASU Invitational held at Karsten Golf Course.
The Women of Troy ended up 16 strokes behind team champion UCLA (861). New Mexico was third (881), followed by Texas (885) and California (886).
It was the seventh top-10 team finish--and fifth time in the top five--as well as a season-best finish for the defending NCAA champion USC women's golf team in 2003-2004.
Sophomore Irene Cho led USC, tying for sixth. She followed up a first-round 75 with a 72 in the second round before finishing strong with a 2-under 70 in the final round. Her 217 over the three rounds is her lowest 54-hole score as a Trojan.
Cho was 10 strokes back of individual champion Charlotte Mayorkas of UCLA (207). Mayorkas' teammate, Gina Umeck, was second (212), while Carolina Llano of Pepperdine was third (213).
Also for USC, sophomore Tanya Dergal tied for 16th (220), freshman Catalina Marin tied for 27th (223), senior Rachel Bell tied for 30th (224) and freshman Veronica Felibert tied for 38th (226). Senior Anna Rawson competed as an individual and placed 79th (238).
The Women of Troy are next in action at the 2004 Pac-10 Championships hosted by UCLA at Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif., on April 19-21.
