Will Ehrman had 22 kills to help the unranked UC San Diego men's volleyball team upset No. 14 USC, 31-29, 30-24, 26-30, 30-27, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (Jan. 19) in USC's Galen Center.
The Tritons notched their first win of the 2007 season to go 1-2 overall and in MPSF play. USC fell to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the MPSF. It was just UCSD's fifth win in 33 tries against the Trojans.
Jason Spangler added 13 kills and a match-high 6 blocks for the Tritons, Adrian Guthals had 12 kills while hitting .455 and made 5 blocks, Stephen Shaw also had 6 blocks and Eric Lesserman had a match-best 16 digs.
For USC, Juan Figueroa had a match-high 23 kills and 13 digs, C.J. Schellenberg had 14 kills and 7 digs and Hunter Current had 5 blocks.
Neither team hit very well, with UCSD at .228 and USC at .185. But the Tritons outblocked USC, 13.5 to 9.5.
USC trailed 29-27 in the first game, but a Current kill and an ace by Gio Altamura tied it before UC San Diego rattled off the next 2 points to end the game. In the second set, USC fell behind quickly, 5-0, and then the Tritons extended the lead to 18-8 before Troy-which hit just .079 in the game-clawed back to 25-21, but USC could get no closer. The Trojans broke a 20-20 tie in the third game with a kill by Jimmy Killian and a pair of UCSD hitting errors to open a 23-20 lead it never surrendered. The Tritons started fast in the final game, going up 8-3, but even though USC eventually pulled within 22-21 UCSD held on for the victory as Troy managed to hit just .059 in that game.
USC next begins a 4-match MPSF road trip, first traveling to No. 1 UC Irvine on Wednesday (Jan. 24) and then to crosstown rival No. 3 UCLA on Saturday (Jan. 27) in the Kilgour Cup with Lexus Gauntlet points on the line.
