Playing in its final regular season tournament, USC Head Coach Andrea Gaston was looking for sharp and consistent play before heading into the postseason.
The No. 3 Trojans complied, as senior Dewi Claire Schreefel pocketed a one-hole playoff to capture her third career collegiate tournament while the Women of Troy won for the second time this season in a dominating effort to take the PING/ASU Invitational on Sunday (April 6) at the Karsten G.C. in Phoenix, Ariz.
USC topped a field that included six top 11 teams, its 54-hole 10-under 854 (281-288-285) 11 strokes ahead of second-place and host Arizona State (165-288-292-285). UCLA was third at 876 (294-296-286). Troy, whose previous victory this season came at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in October, now has five top 2 finishes and has not finished lower than sixth this season.
Schreefel secured her second individual title this season with a 7-under 209 (68-69-72), winning the playoff against Sun Devil Anna Nordqvist with a par on the 18th hole. Schreefel had bogeyed the hole moments earlier to drop into a tie at 7-under at the end of the third round. She had three birdies on the day.
Sophomore Belen Mozo turned in her fourth top 3 finish of the season, tying for third with a 4-under 212 (71-73-68). Mozo played a brilliant final round, birdieing five times with only one bogey to help USC build on its second-round lead.
Freshman Lizette Salas turned in her second consecutive strong round, posting two birdies against just one bogey to finish tied for 15th with a 4-over 220 (77-72-71). It was her fifth top 20 finish in her last six starts.
Sophomore Stefanie Endstrasser also tied for 15th at 4-over 220 (71-75-74), marking her third top 20 finish in four outings with the Trojans.
Senior Paola Moreno tied for 18th at 5-over 221 (71-74-76), her second straight top 20 showing and fourth on the season.
Freshman Joanne Lee, playing as an individual, tied for 11th at 2-over 218 (72-74-72).
USC returns to action when it hosts the 2008 Pac-10 Women's Golf Championships, April 21-23, at the Palos Verdes C.C. in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.
