Maria Sanchez Secures Semifinal Spot

SAN DIEGO, CAILF. - No. 3 seed Maria Sanchez went up against her own USC teammate in the quarterfinals of singles play at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championships in San Diego today, and secured a place in Sunday's semifinals with a powerful win. Sanchez will face No. 6 seeded Andrea Remynse of UCLA in the semifinals.
No. 5-seeded USC freshman Danielle Lao had made quick work of her Round of 16 opponent earlier in the day to earn a place against her junior teammate Maria Sanchez in the afternoon's quarterfinals. Lao's 6-1, 6-1 win over Anais Dallaro put her up against Sanchez for the rights to a semifinal slot. Sanchez proved the stronger Trojan on the day, posting a 6-1, 6-2 win over her freshman teammate to take a step into the semis.
On the other side of the bracket, Alison Ramos came up out of reach of a spot in the semis when No. 2 seed Yasmin Schnack of UCLA managed a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ramos in the quarterfinals.
In doubles play, Sanchez added to her workload on the day with a quarterfinal match alongside teammate Valeria Pulido. Pulido/Sanchez were the tournament's No. 2 seed, and fought out a tight match with No. 5 seed Brown/Hein of ASU, only to take a 9-7 loss to come up short of a doubles semifinal bid.
