Danielle Lao Rolls On In ITA All-American Action

USC freshman Danielle Lao has made her arrival to the collegiate women's tennis scene known with a winning run to open up 2009 competition. The young Trojan followed up her winning run through 2009 Riviera/ITA All-American Pre-Qualifying with three more wins in the qualifying bracket and an opening win in today's All-American main draw.
Today at the Riviera Country Club, Lao pinned up a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over another qualifier, Aeriel Ellis of Texas, in the first round of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. Lao had gathered momentum earlier in the week with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Georgia's Nadia Gilchrist, a 6-2, 6-3 win over Clemson's Keri Wong, and then a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 comeback effort against Michigan's Rika Tatsuno to move into today's main draw action.
Also in the main draw with a winning qualifying stretch was sophomore Alison Ramos. Ramos topped Oklahoma's Ana-Maria Constantinescu 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to start off the qualifiers and then beat No. 3 seed Kristin Boxx of Mississippi 6-3, 6-4 and the Old Dominion's Nadine Fahoum 6-2, 6-3 to punch her ticket to the main draw. Today, however, Ramos faced Cal's Marina Cossou and fell in a 6-0, 6-2 decision in the first round.
Junior Maria Sanchez was handed a difficult draw for her main draw first round match, going up against Cal's No. 4 seed Jana Juricova. Juricova managed a 7-5, 6-3 win over Sanchez today in the first round at the Riviera. Senior Sarah Fansler was upended in the first round of qualifying play in a marathon match that Dartmouth's Molly Scott won 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2.
