Trojans Tied For 9th At Olympia Fields

Led by freshman Martin Trainer, the USC men's golf team finished tied for ninth after the first round of the season-opening 2009 Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational on Friday (Sept. 18) at the Olympia Fields (Ill.) C.C.
Northwestern leads the event at 6-over 286. USC is among three schools tied for ninth at 15-over 295.
Trainer led USC with a 3-over 73 to tie for 22nd while junior Matt Giles and freshmen T.J. Vogel and Sam Smith are tied for 29th at 4-over 74. Sophomore Steve Lim is tied for 54th at 7-over77.
Trainer's round featured an eagle on the par 5 first hole. Starting on the 10th tee with the rest of the team, he was 4-over on the front 9 but thanks to the eagle and a pair of birdies was 1-under on the back 9.
Smith had four birdies mixed into his round while Vogel had three and Giles had a pair.
Action continues Saturday and Sunday.
