Sophomore Martin Trainer (tied for seventh) and freshman Ramsey Sahyoun (tied for 18th) each posted USC career bests to lead the Trojan golf team, which tied for fourth after the final day of the Gifford Collegiate Championship in San Martin, Calif., on Wednesday (Nov. 10).
In an event in which six golfers play and the top five scores count (compared to the usual five-count-four format), the Trojans couldn't match the consistency that marked their second round and ultimately finished the 54-hole event at 39-over 1104 (378-351-375). Still, it was USC's third straight top 5 finish after starting the season with a 15th. UCLA was first at 9-under 1074 (367-360-347).
Trainer finished at 2-over 215 (73-70-72) with a final round that included four birdies and five bogeys. He was 1-under for the day until bogeys on his final two holes. Sahyoun tied for 18th at 7-over 220 (79-69-72). He sunk six birdies in an eventful round that also included five bogeys and a double.
Sophomore T.J. Vogel tied for 20th at 8-over 221 (75-71-75) and had a pair of birdies on the final round. Steve Lim tied for 26th at 10-over 223 (72-72-79), the junior unable to overcome a streak of eight consecutive bogeys that marred his final round.
Freshman Jeffrey Kang tied for 38th at 12-over 225 (79-69-77) and senior Bo DeHuff was 71st at 24-over 237 (79-78-80).
