Freshmen Jeffrey Kang and Ramsey Sahyoun led a youth movement for the Trojans on Tuesday (Nov. 9), each carding a 69 to lead the USC men's golf team into third place after the second round of the Gifford Collegiate Championship in San Martin, Calif., on Tuesday (Nov. 9).
In an event in which six golfers play and the top five scores count (compared to the usual five-count-four format), the Trojans moved from sixth to third at 19-over 729 (378-351) thanks to a 4-under second round. The only team that finished with a better second day was first-place Stanford, which leads at 6-over 716 (368-348). UCLA is second at 17-over 727.
Both Kang and Sahyoun shaved 10 strokes off their first-round scores and are now tied for 24th at 6-over 148 (79-69) after identical scores for the second day in a row.
Kang was 3-under on the front 9 and only had a bogey on the back for his 2-under round while Sahyoun used an eagle on a par 4 10th hole to offset bogeys on 2 and 11 before birdying 13 and 18 for his first sub-70 round as a Trojan.
Meanwhile, both sophomore Martin Trainer and junior Steve Lim maintained their solid play and are tied for seventh and tied for ninth, respectively. Trainer is sitting at 1-over 143 (73-70) after a round that featured four birdies and an eagle on a par 4 8th hole. Lim is at 2-over 144 (72-72), rallying from a 5-over-par start through five holes, going 4-under the rest of the way.
Sophomore T.J. Vogel is tied for 13th at 4-over 146 (75-71). He was 2-under through eight holes and 2-over on the back 9. Senior Bo DeHuff is 70th at 15-over 157 (79-78).
Play concludes Wednesday.
