LOS ANGELES -- Seven baseball players are attending classes at USC and will be eligible to play for the 2011 season, interim head coach Frank Cruz announced today.
The enrollees are: outfielder Omar Cotto-Lozada (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Bonneville HS); right-handed pitcher James Guillen (Covina/Damien HS); catcher Jake Hernandez (Rancho Cucamonga/Los Osos HS); left-handed pitcher Kyle Richter (Santa Margarita/Santa Margarita HS); shortstop/right-handed pitcher James Roberts (Cupertino/Archbishop Mitty HS); left-handed pitcher Bobby Wheatley (Villa Park/Orange Lutheran HS) and right-handed pitcher Austin Wood (Niceville, Fla./St. Petersburg College).
"I think it's a big step in the right direction for us to keep players who had the opportunity to play in the major leagues, but wanted to pursue their education here at USC," said Cruz.
Wood was the highest draft pick (4th round, Tampa Bay) in the 2010 draft among Pac-10 Conference players who will be attending college after going 3-0 this summer in the famed Cape Cod Baseball League with a 0.74 ERA.
USC opens the 2011 season with a tournament, Feb. 18-20, that features Cal Poly, North Carolina and Missouri.
