SPOKANE, WASH. -- The No. 22 USC women's soccer team gutted out a win on the road in staging a comeback to tie and eventually win 2-1 in overtime at Gonzaga. The Trojans fell behind in the first half, but would get an equalizer from Elizabeth Eddy to force overtime. In the 96th minute, another USC freshman served up the winner, as Autumn Altamirano nodded in the goal on an Eddy assist to lock down the win for the Women of Troy. USC is riding a five-game win streak and holds a 6-1-2 overall record. Gonzaga goes to 3-6-1 with today's USC victory.
USC applied the first pressure of the match with deep runs that generated some early corner kicks and a pair of offsides calls. But Gonzaga managed to turn the tide and with 30 minutes ticked off the scoreboard, the Bulldogs were causing trouble for the Trojan back line. Gonzaga managed a series of corner kicks, and after a string of test runs, the Bulldogs broke through with a score in the 34th minute of play to put the Trojans behind 1-0.
USC out-shot Gonzaga 10-5 in the second half, including a blast off the crossbar from Megan Ohai and a flurry of chances earlier in the half. In the 69th minute, it was a breakaway that did the trick. Brittany Kerridge served up a pass upfield for Elizabeth Eddy, and Eddy put away her score off the left post and in to lock up the match at 1-1. Neither team would steal the advantage in the remaining time, leaving the game extending into overtime. Gonzaga looked to be the early enforcer, but the Bulldogs could not take a crack at the USC goal. In the 96th minute, USC went on the attack, with Eddy sailing a cross to the middle of the box. Her fellow freshman Autumn Altamirano was there to welcome the ball, driving her header through for the goal and the win.
USC now heads to Cheney, Wash., to pay a visit to Eastern Washington in a 12 p.m. match on Sunday (Sept. 26).
