CHENEY, WASH. - The USC women's soccer team topped off a winning road trip with its sixth straight victory in the Trojans' powerful 5-1 win over host Eastern Washington today in Cheney, Wash. Breaking through with the first two-goal game of her USC career was sophomore Courtney Garcia, who scored to answer the Eagles' surprise early strike and then knocked in USC's fifth goal of the day to wrap up the road win. USC improves to 7-1-2 after a victorious Washington visit this weekend, while Eastern Washington goes to 0-8-1.
The Trojans were put on their heels early in the match after coming out flat against the host Eagles. EWU got on the board first with a goal at the 1:32 mark of the game. The surprise 1-0 deficit woke up the Women of Troy, who managed to regroup and rattle off two goals in the next 10 minutes. At 6:20, Courtney Garcia notched her first goal of the day - and first for the sophomore this season - when she took a pass from Elizabeth Eddy and scored to lock the match up 1-1. Five minutes later, sophomore Samantha Johnson plugged in another for USC when she made EWU pay for a misclearance and put the ball into the upper corner of the goal to make it 2-1 USC.
The Trojans' pressure kept coming in the half, but USC would not break through again until moments before halftime hit. Five seconds before the halftime horn would sound, freshman Haley Boysen got the assist from Autumn Altamirano to bump USC ahead 3-1 at the half.
The second half was largely under USC control as well with the Trojans out-shooting the Eagles 16-3 in the final 45 minutes of the match and forcing six saves out of EWU's second-half goalkeeper Jamie Walker. It wasn't until the 85th minute that USC got to the back of the net again, this time on a solo mission from senior Karter Haug. Haug blasted a free kick for USC from 25 yards out, sending it through for the score and a 4-1 USC advantage. Barely three minutes later, Garcia padded it to 5-1 with her second goal of the day when she plugged in her own rebound off the post to close down the win for USC.
Unbeaten now in nine straight games, the Trojans have a single game set for next week, paying a visit to the only team to hand the Trojans a loss this season when USC goes to San Diego for a 7 p.m. game on Friday (Oct. 1). The Toreros snagged a 1-0 win over USC in the first game of the year at McAlister Field.
