Trojans Take Early Lead At Gifford Collegiate

Senior Steve Lim fired a 5-under 66 while freshman Anthony Paolucci and sophomore Jeffrey Kang each carded 68s to lead the USC men's golf team into first place after the first round of the Gifford Collegiate at the CordeValle G.C. in San Martin, Calif.
The Trojans, who also led after the first round of their previous tournament, combined for a 10-under 345 (in the six-play, five count format), with host UCLA second (348) and Virginia third (355).
Lim posted five birdies and 13 pars on the day, closing with birdies on 16 and 18 to tie for second, three back of leader Patrick Cantlay of UCLA.
Paolucci was 3-under on the front 9 with three birdies and finished there after a bogey on 17 and a birdie on 18. Kang was also 3-under on the front 9 and also birdied 18 to stay there.
Junior Sam Smith is under par at 1-under 70, good for a ninth-place tie. He was 2-under on the back 9 and was at par on the back 9 before a bogey on 18.
Junior Martin Trainer is tied for 25th at 2-over 73 while sophomore Ramsey Sahyoun is tied for 31st at 3-over 74.
Action continues Tuesday and Wednesday.
