Murphy Troy had 11 kills and Tony Ciarelli added 10 kills to lead the No. 1 ranked USC men's volleyball team to a tight 25-23, 28-26, 25-23 sweep over No. 15 UC San Diego on Friday (March 11) in USC's Galen Center.
USC improved its overall and MPSF records to 13-1. The Trojans are off to their best overall 14-match start since 2000 (also 13-1) and their best MPSF 14-match start since 1991 (14-0).
UC San Diego dropped to 6-15 overall and 3-12 in the MPSF.
Troy added 7 digs and 6 blocks, both match highs, while hitting .417. Austin Zahn had 5 blocks for the Trojans, Steven Shandrick added 4 blocks and Henry Cassiday had 7 digs.
For UCSD, Carl Eberts and Sebastian Brady each had 11 kills , with Eberts adding 6 digs and Brady hitting .600.
USC hit a season-low .232 in the match, but the Tritons hit just .181. The Trojans had 12.0 blocks to UCSD's 5.0. The Tritons served 6 aces.
USC trailed 10-5 in the first set, caught up at 13-13, then the set remained tied to 21-21 before the Trojans ran off 3 straight points. The second set seesawed throughout before consecutive kills by Zahn and Troy finished it. In the third set, UCSD overcame a 14-10 deficit and went ahead 17-16, then it remained close until a Troy kill followed by a combo block by Troy and Zahn ended the match.
USC next hosts No. 7 UC Irvine on Saturday (March 12) in an MPSF match at 7 p.m. in the Galen Center.
