No. 24 USC finished perhaps its best event of the season with a 4-1 win to claim third place overall at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship with a 4-1 win over Texas Tech on Tuesday (March 22) at Hawks Ridge G.C. in Ball Ground, Ga.
USC had advanced to the semifinals after wins over Iowa and Georgia Tech Sunday before falling to Duke on Monday. But the Trojans responded today with a big win over the Red Raiders.
Freshman Jeffrey Kang completed a perfect three days of play, improving to 4-0 after a 2 and 1 win over Texas Tech's Tyler Weworski. Kang never trailed in the match.
Junior Steve Lim improved to 3-1 after a 2-up win over Nils Floren, coming from behind during the final three holes, while sophomore Martin Trainer also went to 3-1 after a 3 and 2 victory over Chandler Rusk. He also did not trail at any time during the round.
Sophomore Sam Smith downed Texas Tech's Will Griffin, 3 and 2, while sophomore T.J. fell to Matt Smith, 2-up.
