Sophomore Martin Trainer tied for fifth and sophomore Sam Smith tied for 13th to lead the No. 25 USC men's golf team to second place at the 65th annual Western Intercollegiate on Sunday (April 17) in San Jose, Calif.
USC finished at 24-over 1074 (362-349-363), eight shots back of first-place UCLA (1066). Oregon and August State tied for third (1076). Like at the upcoming Pac-10 Championships, six players play in the event with five scores counting.
The second-place finish comes on the heels of USC's win last week at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational and a third-place finish at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play.
Trainer finished at even 210 (70-69-71) with four birdies to offset three bogeys and a double. His tie for fifth was a season-best.
Smith notched his third top 17 finish this season at 4-over 214 (70-71-73) with three birdies and three double bogeys.
Freshman Jeffrey Kang tied for 23rd at 7-over 217 (73-68-76) while junior Steve Lim tied for 29th (72-74-73).
Sophomore T.J. Vogel tied for 33rd at 10-over 220 (77-70-73) and freshman Ramsey Sahyoun rounded out USC's efforts with a tie for 58th at 13-over 223 (79-71-73).
