Tanner Jansen had 9 kills while hitting .412 to help the No. 5 USC men's volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-16, 25-20 non-conference sweep at NCAA Division II foe Cal Baptist on Thursday (Jan. 5).
USC, playing its regular season opener after falling to Canadian power Alberta in 5 sets in an exhibition match on Wednesday (Jan. 4) , is 1-0, while Cal Baptist fell to 0-2.
Tony Ciarelli added 8 kills while hitting a blazing .727, Robert Feathers had 8 blocks, Henry Cassiday had 8 digs and Micah Christenson had 7 digs and 3 aces.
For CBU, Aaron McCalmont had 11 kills and 6 digs.
USC outhit CBU, .359 to .111, and had more digs (27 to 18).
The Trojans broke a 13-13 tie in the first set with a 4-point scoring run and were never threatened the rest of the way. After falling behind 5-2 in the second set, USC soon after scored 7 points in a row to forge a 12-7 lead that it never relinquished. Troy had a 5-0 run to open a 9-4 edge in the third set and CBU never could catch up.
USC now returns home next week for its 2012 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener against No. 7 Long Beach State on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Galen Center.
