Freshman Doris Chen turned in her second consecutive strong round to pace an overall solid day by the No. 4 USC women's golf team as it moved from sixth to second place after two rounds of the 2012 Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge on Tuesday (Feb. 14), at the Palos Verdes (Calif.) G.C.
The Trojans, the two-time defending champions of the event, combined for a 7-over 291 for the second-lowest round of the day and now stand at 20-over 588 (297-291). Unfortunately, the low round belonged to day one leader UCLA and the Bruins now enjoy an 18-stroke advantage over the Trojans. Pepperdine is third, 22 back.
Chen, who only competed in one fall event, followed her first-round 72 with a 71 and is tied for fourth at 1-over 143. She was 1-over on the front 9 and 1-under on the back (with three birdies) for her par round. She is three strokes behind Duke's Lindy Duncan (140).
Sophomore Sophia Popov moved into a tie for 14th at 5-over 147 (74-73). She was 1-over on both nines. Senior Lisa McCloskey, aiming for her fourth top 10 finish in as many outings this season, is tied for 19th at 6-over 148 (76-72). She was 3-under through 12 holes before dropping to even on the next two holes.
Senior Inah Park is tied for 32nd at 8-over 150 (75-75) while sophomore Rachel Morris is tied for 39th at 10-over 152 (76-76).
Action concludes Wednesday with a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m.
