Former USC swimming star Ous Mellouli, the defending Olympic champion in the 1500-meter freestyle from Tunisia, won the men's 10K at the FINA Olympic Marathon Swim Qualifier in Setubal, Portugal, on Sunday (June 10).
Mellouli, competing in only his second open water race, won the race in 1:45.18.5, more than 11 seconds ahead of second-place Richard Weinberger of Canada (1:45:30.2).
"It's definitely exciting to qualify for the 10K race," Mellouli said. "I was probably the least experienced swimmer in the race today, but I'm thrilled to have earned my spot in the 10K event and to qualify for another event at the Olympic Games."
Mellouli was already scheduled to race in the 200m, 400m and 1500m free.
