Tanner Smith Leads The Trojan Pack At SDSU Fall Invite

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. — The USC contingent at the 2015 San Diego State Fall Invitational was a strong one, with nine Trojans in action at the event in San Diego. Reigning supreme in his Flight 2 draw was sophomore Tanner Smith, who worked his way into the final against teammate Thibault Forget and pulled off the win today. In Flight 3, David Laser won twice to reach the final in that flight, falling in his last match. In Flight 1, two Trojans reached the semifinal round, as freshman Jake DeVine and junior Connor Farren notched a pair of wins apiece to score semifinal spots. DeVine went one round better, claiming a semifinal victory to move into the final, where he'd fall in a three-setter.
Almost every Trojan in the mix came away with at least one win during the event. In Flight 1, aside from DeVine's run to the final and Farren's semifinal appearance, freshman Logan Smith and junior Rob Bellamy both reached the quarterfinals, while Kalman Boyd was stymied in his first match of the event following a first-round bye. In Flight 2, where Tanner Smith maneuvered to a championship victory over teammate Forget, sophomore Henry Ji snagged two wins before he, too, had to face Smith in the semis. David Laser held court as the lone Trojan in Flight 3, netting two wins before falling in the final.
In doubles, USC had four pairings in the mix for Flight 1. Boyd and Laser paired up and fell in the first round but would go on to work their way into the consolation final with a pair of followup wins before falling in that last match. Freshmen DeVine and Logan Smith opened up with a win and would go up against fellow Trojans Bellamy and Tanner Smith in a quarterfinal clash. The elder Trojans got the win in that one, but would fall in the semis. So, too, did Farren and Forget drum up a pair of wins out of the gates, only to fall in their semifinal match.
