Failla, Smith Wrap ITA Southwest Regional Runs In Singles Semifinals

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. — USC's young guns saw their singles runs at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships come to a close in today's semifinals. Freshman Jessica Failla and sophomore Gabby Smith both impressed at the tourney with their deep runs before falling to higher seeded opponents today in San Diego.
Freshman Failla had surrendered only a single set in her journey to the singles semifinals, where she'd go up against No. 10 seed Luisa Stefani of Pepperdine. Stefani had already proved her power with an upset of No. 2 seeded Trojan Madison Westby earlier in the draw, and Stefani was a tough contender again as she managed a 7-5, 6-3 win over Failla in today's semifinals.
The relative veteran of the bunch, sophomore Smith had rolled through straight-set victories all the way into today's semifinal bout. The No. 4 seed in the draw, Smith was up against top-seeded Catherine Harrison of UCLA in the semis. The #22 Bruin was able to fend off the Trojan, notching a place in a final with her 7-5, 6-4 win over #59 Smith.
