GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The 15th-ranked USC women's rowing team completed heats and repechages of the 2015 NCAA Championships at Lake Natoma on Friday, May 29. The Women of Troy put all three boats into C/D semifinals set for Saturday (May 30).
In the day's first race, the Trojans took the water in the first heat of the I Eights division. The winner (California, 6:23.735) led the entire way, but USC found itself in a three-way fight for second place with Princeton and Yale through the first 500 meters. The Trojans fell back to fourth at the midway point, but maintained contact with the Tigers and Bulldogs. With 500 to go, Gonzaga pulled ahead of USC to finish in fourth (6:35.659) and left the Trojans in fifth place (6:38.142). Princeton finished in second (6:28.441) to edge Yale (6:30.231).
The varsity eight then had to face Yale again in the first I Eights repechage, but saw a familiar foe claim first place as Washington State charged down the stretch to win the rep with a time of 6:27.798. The Trojans fought off Yale (6:34.541) to claim fourth place with a time of 6:33.541, but Harvard secured a spot in the A/B semifinals with a second-place finish (6:29.088) to edge Wisconsin (6:29.310). Massachusetts took sixth (6:55.713) and was followed by Jacksonville (7:08.524) in seventh. The USC V8 was coxed by senior Kellyn Freire, who had freshman stroke Dorottya Bene in front of her. Elizabeth Turner sat in the seventh seat followed by Lindsay Gibson, Keret Einaste, Madara Strautmane, Darian DiCianno, Alice Riley, and Marliis Reinkort in the bow.
In the II Eights' fourth heat, clear packs formed right from the beginning. California led for most of the race and finished with the win (6:34.635) but Yale (6:36.963) and Michigan (6:40.149) stayed close most of the way before the Bulldogs grabbed second place within the final 500 meters. The Trojans sat square in fourth place (6:47.575) and had open water over Massachusetts (7:00.375), which defeated Navy easily (7:11.935) in seventh place.
The USC 2V8 produced nearly the same time in the repechage (6:47.018) but finished in third place. Wisconsin won the repechage (6:36.792) with Indiana in second place (6:40.155). The Trojans came in ahead of Notre Dame (6:51.692), Massachusetts (6:54.995), Gonzaga (6:57.369), and Jacksonville (7:29.928). The second varsity eight was coxed by Kaelyn Ibold with freshman Kendall Sinosky at stroke. She was followed by Ida Gørtz Jacobsen, Sasha Varekova, Sara Bilimoria, Gitta Kivilaan, Caroline Boals, Katherine Gleadow, and Shelby Adair in the bow.
In the third heat of the Fours division, the Trojans took fifth (7:39.990) ahead of Central Florida (8:08.506). Virginia won the heat (7:15.394) as it edged Yale (7:17.590). Notre Dame finished comfortably in third place (7:29.351) with Navy in fourth (7:35.576). The Trojans then took third in the repechage, but didn't go without a fight. Out of lane six, USC made a big charge at the end of the race to finish with a time of 7:31.506, right ahead of Navy (7:32.748). Just a few seconds ahead, Michigan won the repechage (7:27.074) as it held off Texas (7:28.991). Wisconsin was back in fifth (7:39.568) with Gonzaga (7:47.157) in sixth, nearly a minute ahead of Jacksonville (8:46.590) in seventh. USC's varsity four was coxed by Alexandra Fowler with Isabel Fitter at stroke, followed by Sofia Sobotta, Elaine Krebs, and Kamali Houston at bow.
On Saturday, May 30, the USC V8 will race in the first C/D semifinal at 8:40 a.m. PT. The top three there will advance to the upper final with the bottom two to the lower final. The 2V8 races in its C/D semifinal at 9:10 a.m., and will be followed by the V4, which will face in the Fours C/D semifinal at 9:50 a.m.
