No. 6 Trojans Complete Wild Comeback at Arizona State, 2-1
October 08, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
The victory is the team's fifth in come-from-behind fashion this year.
TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 6 Trojans completed a wild comeback victory at Arizona State, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Sun Devil Stadium.
The Trojans (10-1-1, 4-0-1 Pac-12) completed their fifth come-from-behind victory over the year, also overcoming a red card at the end of the first half, playing the entire second half with 10 players.
The Sun Devils (4-7-2, 1-3-1 Pac-12) came out with a bang in the first half, dominating the run of play, outshooting the Trojans 9-2 in the period. They found the back of the net early on, in the 10th minute of play, as Jenna Purfield took the ball, beat a defender and took a shot at the top of the 18-yard box, finding the lower corner of the inside post, and the Trojans trailed 1-0.
Then in the final minute of the first half, Trojan defender Dominique Randle was issued a straight red card, a controversial call on a hard challenge, putting the Trojans down a player.
The Trojans fought through the adversity however, and in the 61st minute Sun Devil defender Angela Boyle was whistled for the foul and shown a straight red card on a similar challenge to that which gave Randle her red.
For the final 29 minutes of the match both sides played with 10 players, and the Trojans took advantage of the even playing field.
Off the foul that drew the red card, freshman forward Tara McKeown's free kick curved into the far post from the left corner of the 18-yard box. The goal is the fourth of the season for McKeown and tied the game at 1-1.
With a tie ballgame, the Trojans struck again in the 73rd minute. The build-up off a throw in from the right side was outstanding, as Nicole Molen directed a header to Hailey Hite, who with her back to the goal laid it off for Amanda Rooney, who hammered home a shot into the upper right corner from about 15 yards out. The goal is Rooney's first of the season and the eventual game winner.
Trojan goalkeeper Kaylie Collins was outstanding, doubling her previous career high saves number with eight against the Sun Devils.
Sitting at 10-1-1, the Trojans are off to their best start since the 2008 season when they were 12-1-1.
The Trojans head back home to McAlister Field this week as they host Colorado on Friday, Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. PT. Purchase tickets online at usctrojans.com/tickets.
