November 06, 2017 | Men's Golf, Features
Suh, newly minted national No. 1, posts seventh round under 70 this fall.
Junior Justin Suh fired a 4-under 67 to grab a share of first and lead the USC men's golf team on the first day of the Saint Mary's Invitational at the Poppy Hills G.C. in Pebble Beach, Calif., on Monday (Nov. 6).
The Trojans combined for a 3-over 287, six back of first-place San Francisco and four back of a tie for second place.
Suh, who ascended today to the top spot in Golfweek's player rankings, backed up the lofty spot with his seventh round under 70 in 10 outings this year that lowers his current stroke average to 68.1.
The junior's first round featured birdies on 16, 17 after starting the round on 10 and included two more red squares on 1 and 2 as he pocketed a pair of unblemished 2-under nines to join a four-way tie for the lead. Suh already has a win, a tie for second and a tie for ninth in three tournaments this fall.
Freshman Issei Tanabe had the next most success with a 1-over 72 to tie for 26th after the first day. He opened his round with a birdie on 10 and closed it with two more on 8 and 9.
Freshman Kaito Onishi posted a 2-over 73 and is tied for 32nd, sophomore Kyle Suppa is tied for 51st at 4-over 75 and junior Sam Kim is tied for 68th at 6-over 77 with sophomore Ryan Slater, who is playing individually.
Action will continue Tuesday and Wednesday beginning at 7:30 a.m.
